1) 2002 HOWE CUP, OCTOBER 18-20, WASHINGTON, DC
AND HOWE ARE YOU? -
by Mary Ingle
The 2002 Howe Cup
took place in our Nation's Capital on the weekend of
October 18-20. The
Howe Cup is the premier national team tournament for
women. Teams consist
of 5 players in a specific division: A, B or C. This
year's favorable
turnout consisted of 5 regional A teams, 10 regional B
teams, and 8 C teams.
In addition to an intense squash playing
schedule, the
hospitality included a Friday evening welcome reception on
the 9th floor
in the Hart Senate Building, which sported a great spread of
goodies and a
fabulous view of the city, and a Saturday evening dinner on
the waterfront in
Georgetown. Kudos should be given to the the Howe Cup
Committee , which
included a couple of familiar faces from Texas's squash
past such as Sheldon
Anderson (Houston) and Leslie (Galloway) Connolly
(Austin), for such a
very smoothly run tournament, carefully organized
events, and specific
information about Hotel and Metro transportation. In
fact, if you missed
this event, you missed an EVENT! Might I encourage
more participation
from the women players in Texas for next year's event?
In my opinion, this
is the best National tournament for women not only for
the intense squash experience, but also for the tremendous fun!
2) US WOMEN'S NATIONAL TEAM UPDATE
Women's National Team Trials were held June 18-20 in Seattle Washington. It
was an exciting weekend of squash that had many great wins and tough loses
in a hotly contested battle for a position on the National Team. At the end
of the weekend the National Team order was Latasha Khan, Shabanna Khan,
Julia Beaver, Meredeth Quick , Ivy Pochoda, Louisa Hall, Margaret Elias, and
Hope Prockop. The top four team members will compete in two international
team events in 2002. The first event is the 2002 Pan American Squash
Federation Championships (PASFC) in Quito Ecuador in August. The team will
arrive in Quito five days in advance to adjust to the high altitude. This
year's PAFSC results are especially important because they will determine
the seedings for the 2003 Pan American Games. The US expects a top two
finish at the PASFC so that we are in a position to go for the gold in the
2003 Pan American Games. The second international team event is the 2002
Women's World Team Championships hosted by the Netherlands in October. The
US aims to better their 2000 finish and place in the top fifteen. Sharon
Bradey will coach both teams.

Visit the USSRA Women's Squash Web Site at

2002 section "Fire and Ice - McConnell and Holleran" by Rob Dinerman. Listed
in the June 2002 articles is a link for "Dana Betts Profiled" by Eileen
Schneider. Dana is a US player that started on the WISPA tour last fall and
has since moved up to 54 in the ranking.
